The Lakeland Derby was designed as an annual event that promised the competitive thrill of a race and the reward of knowing proceeds supported a local charity, Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine. Inspired by the Kentucky Derby, the highlight of the event is a swan boat race with ten beautifully hand-crafted swan paddle boats in the heart of Downtown Lakeland, Lake Mirror. The presentation of jockeys, parade to the post, hat parade, and presentation of rose garland to winners were some of the unique elements incorporated into this large scale community event. The event culminated with live music and a fireworks display.
